Our Method

The PHONICS Road to Spelling and Reading faithfully follows the instructional approach for learning English language arts as developed by Dr. Samuel Orton and Romalda Spalding. This approach is characterized as...

...Direct:

Barbara Beers, Master Teacher for students and teachers, directly explains, models, provides guided practice, and applies skills to reading words, phrases, sentences and books.

...Explicit:

Explicit phonics moves from the smallest part to the whole. Students first learn the tools of English, the letters and letter teams, along with the sounds they represent. They then build out from there - from patterns to syllables and then the whole word.

...Logical:

Students are taught to understand the structure and logic of language. They learn the history of the English, study the rules and generalizations of the language, and are required to think through a process, not just memorize facts.

...Systematic:

Language elements are introduced systematically from the simple to the complex and from the regular to the exception.

...Sequential:

We teach in a way that enables a student to make connections from existing information.

...Cumulative:

As students learn new material, they continue to review old material to the level of mastery.

...Multi-Sensory:

Teaching sessions are action oriented with auditory, visual and kinesthetic elements reinforcing each other for optimal learning. Students learn reading simultaneously with spelling, using multiple senses as an aid to building long-term memory.

This approach does not end with spelling, handwriting and reading but continues the same logical approach with all the English grammar, composition, literature, and throughout The LATIN Road to English Grammar.
