About Barbara Beers

Meet the Author.

Over 35 years ago I embarked on the journey to homeschool my three children all the way through high school, and the curricula I developed was an outgrowth of research, training and experience during those busy years.

All three of them turned out to be VERY different learners. As we began working together I gained insights into their natural styles for learning and the weaknesses that went along with each style. One child was a very visual learner, a natural speller and reader, which caused me to develop more challenging studies. Another child was a very kinesthetic learner who learned best by touching, moving and doing. Too much bookwork or too much sitting still and listening caused her to tune out. But handwriting and hands-on activities totally engaged her.

My youngest child struggled with dyslexia. It was my focused work with her that caused me to find the perfect method for all three. Dr. Samuel Orton's study of brain function as applied to learning resulted in his systematic multi-sensory approach for teaching foundational skills in spelling, handwriting and reading. Through in-depth study and practical experience I further applied the Orton-Spalding approach for the rest of the language arts: grammar, composition, literature and Latin.

Over 25 years ago I began publishing the best of our language studies and The LATIN Road to English Grammar was born. These many years later, it is the grand-daddy of all the homeschool Latin curricula and the standard for a coordinated study of Latin and advanced English grammar.

My children were able to study high school equivalent Latin at an earlier age than most because of their foundational skills in spelling, writing, and reading. When other parents and teachers began asking me how I prepared them for Latin, I formalized my study and The PHONICS Road to Spelling and Reading was born.

This 4-year study represents the only language arts curriculum that not only encompasses the Orton-Spalding instructional approach for spelling, handwriting, and reading, but continues the same approach with all of a student's English grammar, composition, literature and intro to Latin.

I invite you to peruse the various links explaining detail of both studies and answering common questions about them.
