Our families share their thoughts and experiences with
The PHONICS Road to Spelling and Reading...

From Lenore Moser:

I just wanted you to know what a pleasure it has been to teach The PHONICS Road to Spelling and Reading this year to my children. I have been using different versions of Romalda Spalding’s Writing Road to Reading during my 20+ years of homeschooling, and this one is the best! The program is very comprehensive and involved, but the way you lay it out makes it easier to follow than “bare-bones” WRR programs I have used in the past. There is nothing in your system that I would consider busy-work or unnecessary. This is English language training at its best.

My mother learned the method from Romalda Spalding in the early 1980’s (when I was in my early teens). Mom was at my house a few months ago when I popped your DVD with the introduction on it into the player. Just between you and me, she said she was so impressed that you were better than Mrs. Spalding at teaching this method. That’s a lot coming from someone who has idolized Romalda for as long as a quarter of a century.

The more I use it, the more I get into the DVDs, the more I recognize how much hard work on your part went into this program. I know I have been getting my money’s worth. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and talent with us.

From Allison Welch:

I was sharing The PHONICS Road program with a friend of mine today, and as I was showing her the program my 7-year-old boy piped up and said, “It has really worked for me. I am now a great speller!” We started Level One in May and we finished it with my 2nd- and 3rd-graders in November. I have seen so much improvement in their spelling and their ability to write. We are now doing Level Two and enjoying it immensely. I am a big fan of this program. Here is a recent review of the program that I wrote to my homeschool group:
My 3rd grade boy’s spelling was awful all last year and, well, his handwriting is awful (but I attribute that to speeding through his work). Now Matthew reads at a very high level and has for 2 or 3 years, but he couldn’t spell. So this year I decided to focus on spelling. I found a new program that incorporates phonics, handwriting, composition, grammar, and such. I am so pleased with this program. My 3rd-grader went from a poor speller to a fairly good speller with all the tools that he needs to be a great speller, and we did all this in just about 4 months. We use The PHONICS Road to Spelling and Reading by Barbara Beers. This program was an answer to prayer for our family. Now it may not be for every family, but the key to me was how she builds the phonics rules using the Spalding method of phonics. Now I was doing phonics before with Phonics Pathways and I like that program, but I lacked the understanding to implement it, and it lacked the rules and things needed for really understanding how to spell English words. We started with Level One and are now in Level Two. You really have to go back to the beginning to get the great foundation necessary. I don’t use everything in Level One with my 2nd- and 3rd-grader, but I am using it fully with my Kindergartener. I highly recommend the Spalding method and how The PHONICS Road implements this method. My 3rd-grader has gone from not being able to spell simple words to being able to write a sentence dictated to him such as, “Some fish live in lakes and rivers.” He got the entire sentence spelled correctly with punctuation correct with no help from me! This is huge for him and me!

From Lori Roper:

I thought I would check in with you after having used your program for a few months. I’m taking my 5th- and 3rd-graders through the program at a quicker-than-scheduled pace. I LOVE IT!! I am so grateful to you for putting this information in a format that I can use. I wish every child could be taught English this way! Both of my children knew the letter teams before we started, so we have simply been reviewing them once a week. I am basically doing a week’s worth of words each day with my 5th-grader and 2 or 3 days’ worth per day with my 3rd-grader. I just move along with them each day until I see that they need to stop. I know that it has been painstakingly time consuming for you to produce these DVDs, but they are so helpful.
I wish there were a way to convince every new home-schooling mom to pay the price to get this program. I know from first-hand experience and much research that teaching this method from the very beginning will prevent so many learning disorders later on. New moms starting out with their children simply do not know how invaluable this method is. Some day I would like to use this method to tutor children who are having difficulty reading. But I still have much to learn myself.

From Kim & Joel Huff:

We ordered The BRIDGE to the Latin Road and The PHONICS Road to Spelling and Reading to use with three of our homeschooled children (ages 11, 10, and 7) for this year. I cannot stress enough how pleased we are with this program!
English is my forte and all three children are strong fluent readers, but only one of them spells well. I was absolutely thrilled by the organized systematic way that the 51 phonemes are presented. The kids ALL have learned so quickly - our 7-year-old is forever pointing out various vowel teams she spots in signs, advertising, etc. I even put our older two through a two-week intensive course in the penmanship style used and their writing has improved tremendously!
My husband learned to read back in the 1970’s in an “open classroom” setting using the whole word memorization approach, and to this day he struggles in reading. He has been avidly watching the teacher videos as I watch them so he can learn the phonics himself--for the first time! It is fun and deeply thorough; challenging, yet not rushing to push too much information at once. The kids love the wide variety of drill games (and have come up with more of their own!), and my 10-year-old has been watching the 7-year-old do The PHONICS Road program and just ASKED today if she could also learn all the phonemes like her sister had. Like I’m going to refuse that?? :)

Just had to let you know that this is the best thing to happen to language arts since the invention of the alphabet! :)

From Mary Hugill:

I wanted to say thank you for the help you have given me. I called a couple of months back because I bought Level Two for my 8-year-old son but realized that I was kidding myself in not having him do Level One first. When I called, you were very helpful in showing me how we could go through Level One more quickly and then go to Level Two. We are over halfway through Level One and just yesterday my son and I were reviewing our phonograms and saying the two-letter ck used only after a single vowel... and he pipes right up and gives me an example word! I didn’t even ask and hadn’t thought to. He did the same thing for the others that use that rule and also for kn. He is understanding very well. My 5-year-old is on w, x, y, and z. She felt so confident today that when I dictated dinner for my son, she followed right along on her paper and wrote the word perfectly! She usually sits there and practices with her tool cards, but today she decided that she wanted to be part of the class. It made me feel so confident as a teacher and I am increasingly grateful for all the work you have put into this curriculum. I am really looking forward to starting the spelling lessons with my daughter because she is so eager to read and write. More than all this, I feel like doors are opening to me in my own education; I was looking at the later levels and The LATIN Road and I can’t wait to learn it!

From Amber Dunham:

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you. Your curriculum is so effective that I am astounded. You even took the time to speak with me on the phone last year. I appreciate your time and care. My 8-year-old son was one of those excellent readers and horrible spellers. However, after only a few weeks with The PHONICS Road I saw impressive improvements. I continue to see him using the songs and methods even when he is writing for fun. This is a wonderful blessing to our homeschool. Thank you so much!

I also have a 10-year-old using The BRIDGE to the Latin Road. Your style shines through and I am very happy. The curriculum is wonderfully systematic and logical, and I plan to continue with the curriculum right through to the end of The LATIN Road. Thank you for sharing your gift of teaching with me and my children!

From Ida Ewing:

I just wanted to write and tell you how much I love your programs. I had come across your curriculum last year and then had the chance to meet you and attend your workshops in Atlanta over the summer. I bought The PHONICS Road for my struggling 9-year-old and my 6-year-old and The LATIN Road for my 11- and 13-year-olds. I LOVE both programs. My 9-year-old has improved dramatically. We had tried other programs but none of them broke words down into all their parts. He is finally “getting it.” My 6-year-old is a sponge and just sucks it all up.

I studied Latin in college and felt strongly about its usefulness in learning about the English language. However, the Latin program I had used for the last two years just wasn’t teaching my kids Latin. Your program is different. They do so much more translating, drilling, and marking that they are really getting it.

I am the kind of homeschooler who likes to find certain people who I admire and respect and then stay with their curriculum. You have become one of those people, in the club with Andrew Pudewa, Steve Demme and Jesse Wise Bauer. There isn’t anything I don’t like about your programs and I will continue to use them and recommend them to others. Thank you for all the hard work you put into these programs.

From Kathi Duchaine:

I just wanted to take a moment to write and thank you for your wonderful series, The PHONICS Road to Spelling and Reading. I have four daughters, all exclusively homeschooled, and I taught the first three to read using another program. When it came time for number four to learn to read, this program was just not working as well as it did with my other girls, and I knew I needed to change.

I was hesitant to try your program, but I am ever so glad I did! My daughter is flourishing with it, and she delights in learning using your method. The funny thing is that my third daughter (who is 10 and currently using The BRIDGE to the Latin Road and doing quite well with it) watches her younger sister completing a phonics lesson and unequivocably states, “Wow, her phonics looks like so much fun!”

Needless to say, my 10-year-old, just for the sake of fun, now joins us in each lesson of The PHONICS Road, completing her own spelling list and also proudly illustrating her own set of the First Readers. She regrets that I never did The PHONICS Road with her, but she is not going to let that stop her from enjoying it now! Anyway, just wanted to thank you again and I sincerely look forward to using your program throughout the duration of our homeschool journey.

From Suzie Humphrey:

I have been using your Level One phonics program with my older children grades 4 and 8. When I was researching which Writing Road to Reading-type of program I wanted, yours was not my first choice. Only because my children were older and I thought that the songs would be too babyish, I started out this year using another program. However, that program was way too time consuming and complicated to even begin, so I put that aside and ordered yours. I have to tell you that I absolutely love it, especially the songs. They are the key to helping my kids learn the rules effortlessly.

About the online audio workshops...

From Maxine Weedon - Thank you for putting the workshops online. They are the best explanation that I have found regarding the explanation of classical methodology.

From Robert Fraire - I recently received several CDs from your company as part of the Old Schoolhouse Magazine free gift package. First, I want to thank you for your generosity. I truly enjoyed listening to Barbara’s seminars. I learned a lot from them.
