FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is your curriculum different from The Writing Road to Reading by Romalda Spalding?

It is not the practice of Schola Publications to comment on other programs. We honor and respect the efforts others have made in forging the way in education. We realize it is natural to evaluate information by experience and/or knowledge of other resources you may have evaluated, as you travel the road to determine what best fits you and your student’s needs.

As a result we will unfold, in the next few paragraphs, a comprehensive overview……

What you will discover in The PHONICS Road to Spelling and Reading is an Orton-influenced complete phonics course designed to take the burden of preparation off you, the teachers and parents. From start to finish, Barbara has modeled the entire curriculum for you on video, showing you WHAT, WHEN, and HOW to teach it. This averages about 45 minutes per week, or about 6-8 minutes per day of teacher training! Let me show you, word by word, day by day, how to teach this fantastic method to your student(s)! We provide everything for you so that your preparation time is minimal, so that you can have the confidence to interact with your student and all the resources to teach spelling, handwriting, reading, English grammar, composition, literature studies and an introduction to Latin in one seamless, fluid method. When you’ve finished this 4 year program, you will have completed the Aires List- a highly respected standard of the 2000 most commonly used English words - as wells about 1000 more words that model the Latin Style of English Spelling – something that no other curriculum offers! You can be confident when you’ve finished The Phonics Road study that you and your students are equipped to continue directly into the 3-year study, The LATIN Road to English Grammar, if you so choose.

I am indeed grateful to Romalda Spalding, Anna Gillingham, and Oma Riggs for continuing the work of Dr. Samuel Orton in systematizing the English language.  Dr. Orton knew and understood the fundamental challenges with teaching the “whole-word” method as it grew to be the preferred method of teaching reading in the early years of the 20th century.  These three women kept his work alive and developed their own “flavors” of his method during the last 40 years. Most teachers using a flavor of the Orton method have had to spend a minimum of 60 hours in training and then many more weeks in preparation of their own notebooks to understand and implement these curricula effectively.
With the birth and growth of the home school movement, which I became a part of in the early 1980s, came an ever-growing number of moms becoming teachers of their children for the first time. Most do not have the time and resources to spend on extensive training. It was after using the Orton Method for developing my own student’s skills and my study of the Latin that I really understood the missing links that helps English make sense. Because Dr. Orton understood how the brain functions and its relation to learning, I used his method to develop all your language arts in the most practical and helpful way, encompassing all learning styles. My curriculum was produced and written to answer the call of parents, teachers, and schools – providing the most efficient delivery of teacher training and practical application of the Orton Method in your home or classroom, at your own schedule and pace.

How long will we spend on a lesson each day?

A day’s lesson should take no more than about 45 minutes a day for beginners (ages 5/6). Lessons are designed to be segmented into a few 15-minute activities during the day. As they progress in building the language, some days may go a little longer.

In the classroom, a teacher may start with the entire class drilling and writing sounds from dictation. Then she may divide the class into different groups and rotate through other exercises, including reading aloud, building words with their Student Tool Cards, and doing different activities from our Ideas and Activities Page. Then she may have the class come back together, dictating the day’s words to be written into their notebook pages.

In the home, you might spend 15 minutes in the morning drilling our sounds and practicing writing.  After lunch you might spend another 15 minutes learning to spell and practice writing the 4 or 5 words for that day. When the student begins reading he will spend another 15 minutes reading aloud to you.  Later in the afternoon the student might spend another 15 minutes writing his final work into his notebook.  There are also times for using the skills we learn in fun games and activities.  You will find, although there is a routine to our days, what the student is learning does not have to be dull because he is totally engaged in the process.

I have an older student who reads okay but does not spell well and hates to write. Is there an age too old to start this study? In which level do I begin?

You ask if there is an age too old to begin... Not really.  I have taught students from 5 years to adult and most ages in between. No matter the age, if a student is lacking the foundations of English, why would you continue trying to build skills on a shaky foundation? There are many families who have students between the ages of 8 and 12 who have chosen to take their students through my program at an accelerated pace to gain the skills they have missed. Many of these older students are able to study through Levels One and Two in a year or less with a parent or teacher willing to work with them, and are ready for the building of more complicated words in Levels Three and Four along with the rich literature studies, composition, and intro to Latin. Many of the adults are actually learning why English is built the way it is for the first time as well.

Let me give you my personal testimony. When I first learned this method in the early 1980s, I was so impressed with the logical systematic approach to spelling, writing, and reading, that I stopped all the subjects (except math and history) that I was doing at that time with my two older children and took them through the whole study in just 2 years. You have to understand that my son was in 5th grade, an excellent speller and reader with beautiful handwriting, and my daughter was in 3rd grade with no particular problems. But unlike any other program, I saw that this method would teach them WHY English is built the way it is and would lead to the best foundational skills in English. I never regretted that decision although there were some who thought I was crazy. But because of this foundation, we were able to go on to study Latin at a time when almost no one was studying Latin younger than high school. As a result, my children were able to master other languages, music, science, and it opened the door to multiple career options. I was able to write The LATIN Road to English Grammar.

The main question everyone asks is, “Where do I start with a student that is not in kindergarten or first grade?” Unfortunately, you cannot jump into The PHONICS Road study in the middle, because each level builds upon the previous one(s). For example, about 3/4 of the spelling rules are introduced in Level One along with many of the foundational explanations that I do not necessarily repeat in later levels. Although we spend some time reviewing each year, I do not reteach everything each year.  So, every student needs to begin at Level One.  The reason an older student struggles is that he is lacking skills, either due to lack of information, not enough practice, or an incorrect view of English.  We must retrain the brain to build the English language from its smallest components to the whole.

We have taught through so many different scenarios and teaching situations it is impossible to list them all. Please feel free to give us a call and we’d be happy to talk through your specific situation.

Our family has a budget and how would I work this in and protect the budget?

When you take a closer look at all the elements provided in this program you will find the price for The Phonics Road is significantly lower than other programs.

The Phonics Road offers six (6) subjects!  We not only teach Spelling, Handwriting and Reading… but encompass ALL of your English Grammar, Composition (with 4 literature studies), AND an Introduction to Latin. And they are coordinated seamless as you teach through all 4 years of the Phonics Road. We set the rules for English spelling and grammar to music for faster and easier application… and a lot more fun! And our 23 first-readers included in Level One are designed to assess reading comprehension, giving your student space to draw a picture to summarize the paragraph they just read.
In addition, you are receiving COMPLETE teacher training - from start to finish! You don’t have to read a manual and guess at how to implement it, or build lesson plans and “hope” you’re doing it right. We’ve provided a master teacher, the author of the curriculum, for you to watch as she models how to interact with your student… and she teaches you how to be the BEST teacher for your student!

The PHONICS Road to Spelling and Reading is designed for ALL types of students: Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic learners! We encourage teachers and students to learn with their strengths while practicing their weaknesses. Our method of Hear – Say – Write - Read uses the natural function of the brain to cement long-term memory, touching each of the learning styles. This means that every student can excel in this method, and there’s nothing more to buy, no matter what kind of learner you have! Using my own 3 children as an example: my son (and oldest) was a natural student… spelling, reading and writing beautifully. He always excelled in math (Trigonometry and higher), and with this language arts foundation and his study of Latin, he ended up with a higher score in Verbal than in Math on his SATs! My oldest daughter, a dominant kinesthetic learner who cartwheeled through life, excelled in her studies and graduated from high school a year early. She went on to cosmetology school and has owned her own successful hair salon for over 10 years.  My youngest daughter struggled with dyslexic tendencies in her early years. As an adult she has no issue with dyslexia and even works with me and our Schola Families… and this method is what I used to teach ALL of them!

We offer many extra resources and opportunities to be connected as a community! Join Barbara for web-calls specific to each Level, as she explains in even more detail how this method works to develop your child’s brain in thinking and reasoning skills, and how to work with each individual type of child.

We hope that you take advantage of all that is offered here, as we would love to have you become part of the Schola Community! Our author has walked through this same process in educating with her own students, and we encourage each of you to do your due diligence, research, and call us with any questions. Should you decide to move forward with The Phonics Road program, together we will take this wonderful journey unlocking the road to a future of unlimited possibilities through learning!
