The best preparation for Latin is not only a study in Latin roots, but solid basic skills in English grammar. The ability to identify the relationships of words in a sentence both by part of speech and sentence structure provides the student with the foundation for Latin translation work. And since no other language in the world affects English as much as Latin, learning Latin prefixes and root words not only prepares him for later Latin translations, but strengthens English vocabulary and spelling.

The BRIDGE to the Latin Road gives you and your student a good working introduction to Latin in the form of common Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes. These Latin components provide the design elements to complicated English words. With the help of color-coded designing cards, your student will learn to build about 400 English words from Latin roots, giving him valuable clues to spellings and meanings.

Using the theme of a builder throughout the year, the student learns to build the English language in the same way a carpenter learns to build a house. With the foundation of basic skills in spelling, writing, and reading English completed, it is time to begin framing a student’s language skills. A good builder begins the rough framing of a building after he has laid the foundation. The framing shows the outline of the building and goes up pretty quickly. Whereas the foundation is built flat on the ground, the framing clearly shows the form of the building. In language, grammar gives form to our words and the strength to our beautiful exterior called composition.

This year begins with the rough framing - an introduction to the various parts of speech and parts of a sentence with Grammar Rule Tunes. These simple tunes help you and your student remember many of our English sentence components. Since a word is NOT a part of speech unless used in a sentence, I will teach you to dictate sentences for your student to examine and learn how words relate to each other in those sentences. Dictating provides the student a great opportunity to coordinate his spelling, writing, and thinking skills with each phrase or sentence he writes. After the rough framing is completed, you will challenge your student as he learns to add roofing support and framing design to his building through the building of scaffolding, which is my process of sentence diagramming, in preparation for Latin. By the end of this study, you and your student will have built your own English reference handbook to use during your 3-year study of The LATIN Road to English Grammar.
